Stainless Steel – Stainless Steel is “Stain less”, it is not “Stain free”. Because Stainless Steel is a Ferro-Nickel Alloy, the Ferrous component will oxidize in the right conditions, and as such, the Manufacturers of these products will not warranty against corrosion or related deterioration of a product’s finish in hostile conditions. Hostile Conditions being Australia’s common Coastal Conditions, where both Water and Salt are present. This warning is particularly pertinent for Door Furniture, which is exposed on the outside of the Door. However, Satin Stainless Steel is a particularly useful product for the manufacture of items such as Latches, Locks, Hinges, Cover Plates and moving parts for its mechanical strength and durability qualities.
Lacquered and Painted Finishes – For those Products that have Clear Lacquered, Painted and Powder Coated Finishes; these Finishes will deteriorate due to normal everyday Handling and Environmental conditions and cannot be guaranteed. Handling causes deterioration in Painted Finishes due to scratching from contact with Rings and Keys. Some of the everyday common Cleaning Products that we handle in our home, can be transferred through handling to your Door Furniture and will chemically react with Lacquer and Paint to cause deterioration. The Quality of the Lacquering process used [Oven Baked vs Sprayed] and the exposure of that Lacquer to environmental conditions [Internal vs External] will affect the speed and rate of deterioration.
Unlaquered Brass - Polished Brass that is in an External Environment will require periodic polishing to maintain its attractive and warm appearance. Some Polished Brass products can be ordered with or without Lacquer. For those products that are Lacquered, and the Lacquer has deteriorated over time to become “pitted”, it is recommended that the remaining Lacquer be stripped with a “Non-Caustic Paint Stripper” and then periodically polished so that it achieves the “nostalgic, luxurious and warm” character which we find to be so attractive. Alternatively, the Brass Item can be allowed to “antique” and take on a “Living Finish”, which can be quite attractive as well.
